Chapter 18

Kendria entered the high school to the usual ruckus making her way to her locker. She caught people looking at her as she passed. It was not a surprise as Regan had seen posts online gossiping about how her house looked like a bomb hit it. Entering her math class, she found Lucas had set himself up at his desk and waved her over when she walked in.

“Hey, Kendria.”

“Hi, Lucas.”

“You look exhausted. Are you getting any sleep these days?”

“Only a little,” Kendria said. She sat down in the plastic chair affixed to the small desk in front of her. “Plastic on the window makes sleeping difficult. I’m also not looking forward to running into Brittany today. I don’t need her crap right now.”

“I can imagine. I do not think you have to worry about Brittany today, though, with what happened to Caleb.”

“Caleb. What happened?”

“I am not sure myself. He was found lying in someone’s backyard yesterday morning, beat up and not having a clue as to what he was doing there. Brittany did not come to school yesterday, so I am guessing she is playing the role of the concerned friend. Word is he was kept in the hospital overnight for psychological supervision.”

“Sounds like we both had a rough time.”

“Yeah. Caleb is beat up by a mystery attacker; a crazy guy breaks into your home, and then some mysterious force destroys the windows in your house. Any idea what could have caused it?”

“Not a clue. As I told you and Regan, I was asleep when the windows shattered.”

“Yeah, but there must be some explanation or trace of what caused the glass to break. Did you smell anything unusual, maybe, like exhaust?”

“Exhaust? From what?”

“A jet, maybe? Regan thinks the damage may have been caused by a fighter jet accidentally flying right over your house.”

“That would be a good possibility.” Still wrong, though. “To be honest, Lucas, I’m done thinking about what caused the damage.” Kendria pulled out her binder and Grade 10 math textbook and then tucked her backpack underneath her chair. “I’m too tired, and it doesn’t matter at this point as it was a freak accident that will probably never happen again. Getting it fixed is more important.”

“Right,” he said. “When will they be fixed?”

“Someone will be coming by in a few days, but I doubt they’ll all be repaired around the same time.”

“That’s not surprising. When I first heard what happened, I was thinking maybe a microburst could have caused enough of a pressure shift to shatter the glass. But Raven Mills has not had any meteorological issues for a while, though we are supposed to get some rough storms this afternoon.”

“Yeah, thunder and lighting. I know. All I need is a random storm on top of everything else.”

“It is not just a thunderstorm,” Lucas said. “It is a whole storm front. There are severe weather warnings all over Southern Ontario with a risk of tornadoes.”

“I didn’t need to hear that. Now I’m going to worry that my house will be swept away by a rampaging whirlwind on top of everything else.
